چکیده

Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) are often compared to graphical user interfaces (GUIs). However, the existing literature is unable to demonstrate clear advantages for either interface, as empirical studies yielded different findings, sometimes even contradicting ones. The current study set out to conduct an in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of both interfaces, based on a comparison between similar TUI and GUI versions of a modeling and simulation system called “FlowBlocks”. Results showed most users preferred the TUI version over the GUI version. This is a surprising finding, considering both versions were equivalent in regard to most performance parameters, and the TUI version was even perceived as inferior to the GUI version in regard to usability. Interviews with users revealed this preference stemmed from high levels of stimulation and enjoyment, derived from three TUI properties: physical interaction, rich feedback, and high levels of realism. Potential underlying mechanisms for these findings and practical implications are discussed. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Study of Design Method for Tangible User Interface

The third industrial revolution facilitated the rapid development of Tangible User Interface (TUI) in Internet of Things (IOT). The concept of TUI broke through the limitation of traditional Graphical User Interface (GUI). By giving objects digital information, the objects in our daily life can be transformed to the tangible interfaces between human and the digital world. Fully using daily life...

Tangible User Interfaces: Past, Present and Future Directions

In the last two decades, Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) have emerged as a new interface type that interlinks the digital and physical worlds. Drawing upon users’ knowledge and skills of interaction with the real non-digital world, TUIs show a potential to enhance the way in which people interact with and leverage digital information. However, TUI research is still in its infancy and extensive ...

My Hands or my Mouse: Comparing a Tangible and Graphical User Interface using Eye-Tracking Data

Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) have drawn the interest of HCI and learning communities because of their potential positive impact on the learning experience. In this paper, we describe a preliminary study of a TUI application for training spatial skills of carpenter apprentices. We designed a tangible interface to perform a CAD modelling activity in a way that resembles what apprentices do in ...

The Design of a Tangible User Interface for a Real-Time Strategy Game

Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) allow interaction with computer applications using physical objects called tangibles. TUIs have a number of latent advantages over traditional user interfaces including spatial naturalness and immediate haptic feedback where users receive both tactile and digital responses from computer systems. This paper presents the preliminary design and test results of a tab...

Understanding the Characteristics of Metaphors in Tangible User Interfaces

The idea of metaphors has been a central and popular element in the design practice of graphical user interfaces. While the principle is commonly applied and discussed in the field of Graphical User Interfaces, its usage in the field of Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) is not yet fully understood. This paper analyses the principle of metaphors in TUIs, based on the main definitions of interface ...
